Island of wild horses

Delft Island

Nestled off the northern coast of Sri Lanka lies a hidden gem waiting to be discovered - Delft Island, also known as Neduntheevu. This small island, often overlooked by tourists, is an undiscovered paradise that captivates visitors with its untouched beauty and rich cultural heritage.

This remote island can be accessed by ferry services from either the Jaffna Peninsula or Kurikadduwan Jetty. From the Jaffna Peninsula, travellers can catch a ferry that takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Delft Island. Alternatively, those coming from the Kurikadduwan Jetty can expect a shorter journey of around 30 minutes.

Delft Island offers a unique escape from the bustling mainland, transporting you to a tranquil world of pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and stunning landscapes. As you step foot on this enchanting island, you'll be greeted by a sense of serenity and awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, Delft Island boasts an ecosystem that is unlike any other in Sri Lanka. The island is renowned for its wild horses that roam freely across its plains, creating an unforgettable sight for nature enthusiasts.

Beyond its natural wonders, Delft Island holds a fascinating history that adds another layer of intrigue to your visit. The remnants of Dutch colonial architecture can still be seen scattered across the island, echoing its past as a strategic trading post during the colonial era. During the 17th century, Delft Island was under the control of the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch established a settlement on the island and used it as a strategic trading post for spices and other valuable commodities. This period of Dutch rule left behind significant architectural remnants, including an old fort and colonial-style buildings that still stand today.

Apart from its historical significance, Delft Island is also known for its unique cultural heritage. The island is home to Tamil-speaking communities who have preserved their traditional lifestyle over generations. Visitors can witness traditional crafts such as pottery-making and weaving, which have been passed down through families for centuries.

The natural beauty of Delft Island adds to its allure. Its pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters attract tourists who are looking for a peaceful getaway. The island's rugged landscape is dotted with ancient baobab trees, adding an exotic touch to the scenery.
