EASTERN SRI LANKA

Exploring the East Coast of Sri Lanka

Eastern Sri Lanka

The eastern coast of Sri Lanka is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by intrepid travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations. Eastern Sri Lanka, often overshadowed by its more popular counterparts on the West Coast, offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that sets it apart from the rest of the island.

Eastern Sri Lanka boasts pristine beaches, lush jungles, and charming villages that provide a glimpse into traditional island life. From the historic city of Batticaloa with its centuries-old fort to the untouched shores of Arugam Bay renowned for its world-class surfing spots, this region is a treasure trove for those willing to explore beyond the ordinary.

Geography

The East Coast boasts a diverse geography, ranging from pristine beaches to lush jungles and serene lagoons. Arugam Bay, known as a surfer's paradise, attracts wave riders from all over the world. The Pottuvil Lagoon provides a tranquil escape for those seeking solitude and birdwatching opportunities. The Yala and Kumana National Parks, nearby, offer exciting wildlife safaris with a chance to spot elephants, leopards, and a wide array of bird species.

The historic city of Batticaloa mesmerizes visitors with its Dutch Fort and picturesque lagoon. A visit to the nearby Kallady Beach is a must for its famous "Singing Fish" phenomenon during the full moon.

Climate & Best time to visit

One of the major draws of the East Coast is its favorable weather, particularly during the dry season from May to September. During this time, the region experiences less rainfall and a gentle sea breeze, making it an ideal destination for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. The monsoon season, from October to January, brings some rainfall but still offers plenty of opportunities to explore the region's lush landscapes and cultural attractions.
