The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka boast a captivating geography that is characterised by mountain terrains, towering peaks, and stunning water features. This region is renowned for its majestic mountains, with some of the highest peaks in Sri Lanka located here. The central highlands are home to Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in the country, standing at an impressive height of 2,524 metres above sea level.

In addition to its lofty heights, the central highlands are also adorned with a network of rivers and cascading waterfalls that add to the region's natural beauty. Rivers such as the Mahaweli Ganga, Kelani River, and Walawe River meander through this picturesque landscape, providing sustenance to the surrounding flora and fauna.

From ancient mythology intertwined with the epic tale of the Ramayana to being the site of the last kingdom in Sri Lanka, Kandy, this region has witnessed significant events that have shaped its cultural landscape.

According to ancient mythology, the Central Hill Country of Sri Lanka is believed to be connected with the Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic. The region is said to have been home to various sites mentioned in the epic, adding a mystical allure to its already breathtaking natural beauty.

Kandy, located in the heart of the Central Hill Country, served as the last kingdom of Sri Lanka before falling under colonial rule. Its significance as a political and cultural hub is evident in its UNESCO World Heritage Site status and iconic landmarks such as the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

The colonial history of the Central Hill Country further adds layers to its narrative. The region was colonised by various European powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, each leaving their mark on its architecture, customs, and traditions.

Climate & Best time to visit

The climate in the central highlands is typically cooler and more temperate compared to other parts of Sri Lanka. The temperatures can range from around 15°C to 25°C during the day, making it a refreshing escape from the heat of the coastal areas.

The best time to visit the central highlands of Sri Lanka is generally considered to be from December to March when the weather is cool and dry. This period offers clear skies, perfect for exploring tea plantations, waterfalls, and enjoying outdoor activities like hiking and trekking.

However, if you prefer lush green landscapes and don't mind occasional showers, visiting during the monsoon season from April to June or September to November can also be a rewarding experience. Just be prepared for some rain and mist that adds a mystical charm to the surroundings.
